A xylophone might indicate a crazy roller coaster, or a biplane capriciously diving over a hillbilly's house, but never a heroine's car out of control in a hilly city, or a jetliner dodging thunderstorms to land. Meanwhile, marimbas often foreshadow villainous activity just around the dark corner, or else cocktails and romance under tiki torches. I wonder why we associate xylophones with something comedic or silly, like a cowboy sidekick on a donkey, or The Beaver hopping downstairs on Saturday morning.
